Humantay Lake Full-Day Tour

Full day

Walk from Soraypampa to the turquoise waters of Humantay Lake on a full-day mountain experience from Cusco. We recommend this tour for nature lovers who are comfortable with a steady uphill hike and want to see the glacial landscapes below the Salkantay range. The trail is shorter than many Andean treks, but the altitude and incline make it physically meaningful. Expect an early departure, breakfast and lunch stops, dramatic mountain scenery, changing weather and enough guided time at the lake to appreciate the setting without rushing.

We pick you up from eligible hotels between approximately 4:00 and 5:00 AM. The first part of the journey crosses the Anta plains and continues west toward the mountain communities near Mollepata. Warm layers are useful during the dark, cool morning.

We pause for the included breakfast before continuing toward Soraypampa. This is the best time to eat, use the facilities and organize the items you need for the hike. We recommend carrying only a light daypack and keeping water, sun protection and rain gear easy to reach.

The vehicle climbs into the valley beneath the Salkantay range. The final road section can be uneven, and travel time depends on traffic and local conditions. At Soraypampa, our guide gives a route and safety briefing before the group begins walking.

The ascent normally takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The path gains elevation steadily over uneven mountain ground. Because the lake sits at approximately 4,200 meters, we maintain a controlled pace and take short rests. Breathing more heavily than usual is normal, but headache, dizziness, nausea or unusual weakness should be reported immediately. As we climb, views expand across the high valley toward Humantay and Salkantay. Local horse services may be offered for part of the ascent, subject to availability and direct payment, but they do not eliminate all walking.

At the main viewpoint, the turquoise lake sits below steep glacial slopes. Its color changes with the light, cloud cover and sediment carried by meltwater. We allow time for photographs, rest and the guide’s explanation of the surrounding landscape and its cultural importance. Weather can change quickly, so we avoid remaining exposed longer than is comfortable.

We return by the same general route. The descent is usually faster but can be harder on knees and ankles, especially when the trail is wet or loose. Trekking poles improve stability and may be reserved through EX003. Back near the transport area, we drive to the restaurant for the included buffet lunch. After eating and resting, we return to Cusco, normally arriving at approximately 6:00 PM.

Everything You Need to Know

You can book directly through our website by selecting your tour, date, and group size, then completing payment online. Once payment is processed and availability is verified, we send your booking confirmation with the details you need for your trip. If you would prefer help planning your itinerary, you can also reach out to us directly before booking.
Our higher-altitude tours, such as Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain, include a first-aid kit and emergency support, and our guides are attentive to how the group is coping with the conditions. If you have a pre-existing health condition or are concerned about the effects of altitude, we recommend consulting your doctor before booking a high-altitude experience.
Some of our services depend on limited or externally controlled inventory, such as Machu Picchu entrance tickets and Inca Trail permits, so a date can occasionally be unavailable. If that happens, we let you know as soon as we verify availability and help you find the closest alternative date or itinerary that works for your trip.
