Machu Picchu 2-Day Tour by Train

2 days / 1 night

This is our most flexible Machu Picchu option, designed for one specific situation: your travel dates are already fixed, and online entrance-ticket availability for those dates is sold out or unavailable. Because this tour confirms your Machu Picchu ticket on-site in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes) instead of in advance, it lets us keep pursuing a ticket for you even after every other channel has closed.

In the ideal, most common scenario, we secure your entrance ticket the morning of Day 1 for your guided visit on Day 2, and our team stays with you 24/7 throughout the process so you're never left wondering what happens next. In the rare case that on-site availability only opens up for Day 3, that extra night in Machu Picchu Pueblo falls outside this tour — see "Good to Know" below and our booking notes for what we do to help.

Quick Facts

Tour Location: Machu Picchu Pueblo and Machu Picchu

Tour Type: Two-day guided train tour, most flexible entrance option

Good For: Travelers with fixed travel dates and no remaining online Machu Picchu ticket availability — the only realistic path to a ticket in that situation

Duration: 2 days / 1 night

Difficulty: Easy; uneven paths and stairs inside the sanctuary

Maximum Altitude: 2,430 m / 7,972 ft

Good to Know: Your entrance ticket is confirmed on-site, subject to same-day availability. Official on-site ticket sales for the following day open at 6:00 AM the day before, and you can check live availability yourself at tuboleto.cultura.pe. In the great majority of cases your ticket is confirmed for Day 2 as planned; in rare cases it may only be available for Day 3, adding a night outside this package — see our booking notes for how we handle that.

Best Season: Year-round

  • Experience Machu Picchu without compressing the train journey and site visit into one day
  • Spend one night in Machu Picchu Pueblo below the sanctuary
  • Enjoy the scenic Expedition train through the Sacred Valley
  • Explore Machu Picchu with a professional bilingual guide
  • Receive coordinated assistance for hotel, entrance, shuttle and train logistics

We pick you up from eligible hotels in Cusco, generally around 7:00 AM, with the final time based on the confirmed train. Please travel with the original passport used for the reservation and a compact overnight bag. Large suitcases should remain at your Cusco hotel because train luggage allowances are limited. We drive through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo station. The road journey normally takes close to two hours. Along the way, you see cultivated fields, mountain villages and the broad valley landscape before reaching the historic rail town of Ollantaytambo.

We board the scheduled Expedition-category train and follow the Urubamba River into a narrower, greener canyon. The journey usually lasts about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes. On arrival in Machu Picchu Pueblo, our representative meets you and assists with the short walk to your hotel.

After check-in, the remaining time is yours to rest, explore the compact town and prepare for the following morning. Lunch and dinner are not included, giving you flexibility to choose a restaurant. We recommend an early evening because the Machu Picchu visit normally begins early. Before you sleep, we reconfirm the guide meeting time, shuttle instructions and the items you should carry.

After the included hotel breakfast, we walk to the shuttle-bus area. Queues can form during busy periods, so punctuality is important. The bus climbs for approximately 25 to 30 minutes to the sanctuary entrance. We recommend using the public restrooms before admission.

We enter at the time printed on your official ticket and follow the assigned circuit. The guided visit generally lasts two to three hours. Our guide introduces the principal terraces, ceremonial spaces, residential sectors, stonework and water-management features available on your route, while explaining how Machu Picchu relates to the surrounding peaks and the wider Inca road system. The exact viewpoints depend on the circuit issued. We explain the confirmed route in advance so you know whether it includes an elevated panoramic area or focuses on the lower archaeological sectors.

After the visit, we descend by shuttle bus to Machu Picchu Pueblo. Depending on the train departure, you usually have time to purchase lunch, collect your overnight bag and walk to the station. Please follow the agreed meeting time because trains operate on fixed schedules.

We return by train to Ollantaytambo and continue by tourist vehicle to Cusco. Arrival is generally between 8:00 and 10:00 PM. Weather, railway operations and road traffic can affect the final time.

Everything You Need to Know

You can book directly through our website by selecting your tour, date, and group size, then completing payment online. Once payment is processed and availability is verified, we send your booking confirmation with the details you need for your trip. If you would prefer help planning your itinerary, you can also reach out to us directly before booking.
Our higher-altitude tours, such as Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain, include a first-aid kit and emergency support, and our guides are attentive to how the group is coping with the conditions. If you have a pre-existing health condition or are concerned about the effects of altitude, we recommend consulting your doctor before booking a high-altitude experience.
Some of our services depend on limited or externally controlled inventory, such as Machu Picchu entrance tickets and Inca Trail permits, so a date can occasionally be unavailable. If that happens, we let you know as soon as we verify availability and help you find the closest alternative date or itinerary that works for your trip.
