Maras & Moray Half-Day Tour

Half day

Discover two distinctive Sacred Valley sites on a half-day tour from Cusco: the circular agricultural terraces of Moray and the mountainside salt ponds of Maras. We recommend this experience for travelers who want meaningful cultural and historical context without committing to a full-day itinerary. The route combines scenic road travel, short guided walks and two very different examples of how Andean communities have worked with landscape and natural resources. It is accessible for most travelers, although uneven surfaces and high-altitude sun still require preparation.

  • See the circular agricultural terraces of Moray
  • Learn about Inca experimentation and microclimate theories
  • View thousands of active salt ponds at Maras
  • Travel through the farming landscapes above the Sacred Valley
  • Complete two distinctive sites in a convenient half-day format

We offer a morning or afternoon departure, normally around 8:00 AM or 1:00 PM. After pickup from eligible Cusco hotels, we travel northwest across the high plateau above the Sacred Valley. The route passes cultivated fields, small communities and distant snow-covered peaks when visibility is clear.

At Moray, we walk to the viewpoints overlooking a series of deep circular and oval terraces. Their form differs from the long hillside terraces seen elsewhere in the Andes. Our guide explains how the site may have helped the Incas observe crop performance and microclimates, while also discussing the interpretations that remain debated. The visit involves short walks on exposed ground. Sun, wind and sudden rain are possible, so layered clothing is useful even on a half-day tour.

We continue toward the Maras Salt Mines. Thousands of shallow ponds descend across a narrow mountainside and are supplied by a naturally salty water source. Local families direct the water through small channels and manage the evaporation process. We view the complex from the authorized visitor areas and explain how salt production has continued across generations. The scenery is highly distinctive, but the site remains an active community resource rather than only a photographic attraction.

After the guided visit, we return by tourist transportation to Cusco. Morning departures generally finish around midday or early afternoon, while afternoon departures return in the late afternoon. Traffic and visitor flow may affect the exact time.

Everything You Need to Know

You can book directly through our website by selecting your tour, date, and group size, then completing payment online. Once payment is processed and availability is verified, we send your booking confirmation with the details you need for your trip. If you would prefer help planning your itinerary, you can also reach out to us directly before booking.
Our higher-altitude tours, such as Humantay Lake and Rainbow Mountain, include a first-aid kit and emergency support, and our guides are attentive to how the group is coping with the conditions. If you have a pre-existing health condition or are concerned about the effects of altitude, we recommend consulting your doctor before booking a high-altitude experience.
Some of our services depend on limited or externally controlled inventory, such as Machu Picchu entrance tickets and Inca Trail permits, so a date can occasionally be unavailable. If that happens, we let you know as soon as we verify availability and help you find the closest alternative date or itinerary that works for your trip.
